There’s more to HIV Prevention than the humble condom
Get checked for sexually transmitted infections
Make sure staying up to date on your status and check-ups is part of your regular health routine – it feels good to know what’s going on, and women are often surprised to learn they can have sexually transmitted infections without having any symptoms! It can be as easy as peeing in a cup or doing a self-swab in the office or lab. And did you know that having another sexually transmitted infection actually increases your risk for getting HIV?
Prepare with PrEP
HIV prevention is sort of like birth control. Be in control of YOUR sexual health! With a daily pill or bi-monthly injection, anyone can be protected against HIV before having sex with PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis).
Take care with PEP
And, just like the “morning after pill” to prevent pregnancy, PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) [SN1] is a 28-day course of medication that can be taken within 72 hours of condomless intercourse to prevent HIV transmission. Whether the condom broke or you’re just not sure what happened last night.
